About Us
Rare Charity funds education where opportunities are rare
but talent is not. To be specific, Rare Charity offers talented people within tea communities access to education. Currently, the charity's operations focus on the Satemwa tea farming community in Malawi, Africa.
When Henrietta Lovell, the founder of Rare Tea Company, visited Satemwa, she saw the possibility of creating social change. She decided to re-invest a percentage of Rare Tea’s annual revenue directly back into the community. Henrietta asked the workers on the Estate where to direct the resource, and they gave her a clear and unanimous answer: education for our children. Rare Charity was founded to respond to this need.
The people working in tea estates represent some of the most marginalised communities in many of the world’s poorest countries.
Our aim is to give ambitious young people the agency to uplift themselves, their households and their community.
Education enables these young people to return to their community as qualified professionals, to implement long-term social change.
